Frank Prout Mahony

Frank Prout Mahony Born: 1862- Died:1916

Born in Melbourne in 1862 Mahony began work at an early age in an architects office. He moved on to study under Giulio Anivitti at the New South Wales Academy of Art. A major artistic contribution was the illustration of the spearing of Edmund Kennedy  in the ‘Picturesque Atlas of Australasia 1886’
From centenary until federation, Mahony was one of the best known Australian artists and illustrators. He specialised in horses and action scenes that stimulated and reflected national sentiment.
Mahony’s work is rare and interesting usually holding a historically significant value. His work is held in the Gallery of NSW.
