James Waltham Curtis

Curtis migrated to Australia during the Victorian Gold rush. He worked in Melbourne colouring photographs for Johnstone, O’ Shannessy & Co , then as an illustrator for the Illustrated Australian News. the Catalogue of the Melbourne intercolonial exhibition 1875-6 described him as the Australian Gericault.

Predominently a landscape painter, seventy of his Australian views were presented from his estate to the Stanford University in California. A talented and almost forgotten colonial artist, J W Curtis works can be found at the art Gallery of New South Wales.
